About Pixelrest

Pixelrest gives away abstract wallpapers that do not exist until you load the page. There is no photo library behind it and no stock licence to worry about — each image is produced by a short drawing routine running in your own browser.

How it works

Every wallpaper is a pure function of three things: a style, a palette, and a numeric seed. Feed the same three values in and you get pixel-identical output every time. That determinism is the whole trick behind the download button.

The thumbnails in the gallery are rendered small, at 640 × 400, because drawing dozens of full-resolution images would make the page crawl. When you download, we do not scale that thumbnail up. We run the same routine again from scratch at your chosen resolution, so a 4K download contains genuine 4K detail — the curves and gradients are recomputed, not stretched.

This also means the seed shown under each image is a permanent address for it. Nothing is stored on a server; the image is reconstructed from those few numbers on demand.

Why some styles look better large

Topographic and Dot Field draw fine lines whose spacing scales with the canvas. They are noticeably crisper in the download than in the preview. Mesh and Aurora are smooth gradients and look much the same at any size.

Licence

Use them for anything. Desktop backgrounds, presentations, video backdrops, client work, commercial products — no attribution, no permission needed, no fee.

We can offer that unusually clean licence for a simple reason: the images are generated by an algorithm rather than collected from photographers or scraped from anywhere, so there are no third-party rights to pass on to you.

Nothing you make leaves your device

All rendering happens on a <canvas> element in your browser, and the download is produced from that canvas locally. No image is uploaded, and we never see what you generated or downloaded. Your saved favourites live in your own browser's local storage. See the privacy policy for the full detail.

How this site is funded

Pixelrest is free and supported by advertising through third-party partners who may set cookies. Ads occupy fixed positions — below the header, one tile within the grid, and one below it. There is deliberately no ad in the download flow: no countdown, no interstitial, no "your download will begin in 15 seconds". Those patterns earn more per download and are precisely why free-wallpaper sites have the reputation they do.
